The Fallen was one of the original Primes scattered throughout the galaxy looking for planets where they could build Sun Harvesters. These massive machines create energon, the vital energy of Transformers, by destroying suns. The Dynasty of Primes had one rule: Sun Harvesters were not to be built in systems which contain life. The Fallen, choosing not to listen to this rule, arrived on Earth in 17,000 BC and started building a new Sun Harvester with other like-minded Cybertronians while killing off any human that got too close to the structure. The other Primes learned of his betrayal and prevented the activation of the Harvester by hiding the Matrix of Leadership. Although they were unable to kill the Fallen, they instead sealed the Matrix away by entombing it with their own bodies, sacrificing themselves to help save Earth and humanity.
As a result, the Fallen became the first Decepticon and the real Decepticon leader (as The Fallen accepts the Fallen as his master), and all future Decepticons would wear an insignia which was similar to The Fallen’s face.
